on Amtrak We hate to sound cliche, but when it comes to train travel on Amtrak's Northeast Regional corridor, the early bird really does get the worm -- or, rather, the discount. If you book your tickets at least 14 days in advance, you'll get 25 percent off the lowest available fare. Sample prices include one-way fares between New York and Washington for $49 and $35 for one-way fares between Philadelphia and Washington. Depending on when you're traveling, savings may be even greater than the advertised 25 percent. When we checked this week, late September tickets to New York were going for $80 for dates less than two weeks away. They dropped to $49 for dates more than two weeks away.
