Light refreshments starting at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., join assistant curator Dr. Susan Behrends Frank for a tour of the exhibition, Surrealism and Modernism from the Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art This fall, The Phillips Collection is host to some of the most important avant-garde art of the early twentieth century. Surrealism and Modernism from the Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art includes paintings, collages, and sculpture by Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, René Magritte, Edvard Munch, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Picasso, among many others. The works in this exhibition represent an exhilarating array of artistic movements. Art lovers will have the chance to explore dreamlike distortions, provocative imagery, and meditations on the subconscious in surrealist works seldom featured in Washington. The Atheneum's twentieth century collection of modernist works forms a complement to the one established by Duncan Phillips. Surrealism and Modernism provides a look at a unique era in the history of collecting by American museums when aesthetically adventurous directors struggled to make the case for modern art to a suspicious public. Surrealism and Modernism from the Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art will be featured at The Phillips Collection from October 4, 2003 through January 18, 2004. Organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut. For more information, contact Reshma ("Rae") Sinanan |
