Due to the deterioration of the bridge
span and columns, P Street Bridge is due for a complete overhaul. It has
been scheduled for re-construction for over two years!
Work already begun on the project
includes new striping of the bridge and the adjacent construction zone, as
well as signs leading into and away from the site. Demolition of the
bridge will start later this week (4/28 - 5/2) after the National Park
Service gives final approval for the protection shield on the underside of
the bridge -- and the protection shield is in place. This will keep debris
from falling onto the roadway and bike path.
Construction Zone Residents have noted
the length of the construction zone. It is longer than described by DDOT
personnel during public meetings prior to the start of the project. DDOT's
Traffic Safety Division is now working with Martins Construction on
possible modifications. DDOT's goal is keeping traffic flowing while
maintaining a safe work zone with the least amount of impact to the
community. DDOT has also gotten a request for changes in both signals and
turning restrictions at the intersections of P and 22nd and 23rd Streets.
We will be looking at possibilities for improvements to ease traffic
congestion.
Parking spaces Thanks to a suggestion
from a resident, DDOT staff looked into, and were able to allow, parking
at spaces on the west side of 23rd Street. Approximately 20 new spaces are
available for parking at anytime by all users.
Notification of Rock Creek Parkway
drivers Backups have been noted on Rock Creek Parkway related to the P
Street Bridge construction. DDOT is working with NPS on putting up message
boards along Rock Creek Parkway to inform drivers to take alternate
routes.
Truck Restrictions DDOT and Councilmember
Evan's office has asked MPD for increased enforcement of truck
restrictions. One Truck Detour sign on the west side of the bridge was
down for a few days, but has now been replaced.
Street Cleaning Residents have asked
whether street cleaning can be removed on streets in order to make more
parking available. Street cleaning is controlled by the Department of
Public Works and is usually removed by petition. Councilmember Evans staff
is assisting in streamlining this process with further consultation with
the community.
